Most people who have legal problems do not go straight to a lawyer for help. If they do seek help at all, they tend to turn to non-legal sources, such as friends, government agencies, welfare agencies and other professionals such as teachers and doctors. This paper explores the challenges and implications of people going through non-legal sources as a pathway to justice. It argues for a greater recognition of and support for non-legal services as key pathways used by people to get legal help.
