Structure of report

This report will give a brief overview of the study methods and a profile of the six LGAs sampled for the survey. This will be followed by background information regarding the levels and types of expressed legal need in Newcastle LGA, as shown by calls to LawAccess and contact with the Legal Aid service. The report will then provide details of the findings from the survey for Newcastle with respect to:
  • the incidence of legal events
  • the distribution of the events across the broad areas of law (civil, criminal and family)
  • major legal events type (e.g. business, accident/injury or housing)
  • what the survey participants did about their legal issues
  • type of help sought
  • problems encountered when seeking assistance
  • satisfaction with help received.
