2004 Justice Awards
The 2004 Justice Awards were presented at Parliament House, Sydney on 7 October 2004 and the Law and Justice Address was delivered by Tim Costello, CEO of World Vision Australia.
Justice Medal
Winner - Dr Robert Mowbray
The 2004 Justice Medal was awarded to Dr Robert Mowbray of the Western Sydney Tenants Service for his work for tenants rights in NSW over 30 years. He established the Tenants' Rights Project in 1970s to address the inequities faced by tenants and, out of this Project, the Tenants' Union of NSW was formed in 1976. He wrote the original Tenants' Rights Manual and was active in lobbying for the introduction of the Residential Tenancies Act in 1987 that provides consumer protection to the state's 1.5 million tenants.

Aboriginal Justice Award
Winner - Phillip Sullivan
Phillip Sullivan is one of the first Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers to work with the NSW Police, he was awarded the Aboriginal Justice Award for his long-term contribution to justice through community organisations in the Murdi Paaki region. His calm and reasonable leadership of the Bourke River Towns Project Steering Committee engendered a cohesive and united approach to justice and equity issues from all members of that diverse committee.

Law and Justice Volunteer Award
Winner - Kieren Traynor
The 2004 Law and Justice Volunteer Award was presented to Kieren Traynor, a steadfast advocate for the right to justice for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay or their social circumstances. In 2001, as a court support volunteer in the Bellingen Shire, she helped establish the Seaboard Legal Referral Service to ensure everyone had access to informed and effective referral and adequate representation. She also volunteered her time to research, write and facilitate domestic violence legal information forums, to ensure that individuals and services know their legal rights and responsibilities, including access to legal and welfare referral options.

Pro Bono Partnership Award
Winner - Mission Australia and the Salvation Army with Freehills
The partnership between Mission Australia, the Salvation Army and Freehills provides free legal advice, representation and support to hundreds of disadvantaged young people. In 2003, Freehills and Mission Australia launched an innovative pilot legal advice clinic for participants in the New Enterprise Initiative scheme (NEIS) which gives long-term unemployed people the opportunity to receive training, mentoring and financial support to set up their own business.
