Data insights in civil justice

The Foundation has been engaged by the Department of Justice NSW to investigate the quality and utility of NSW civil court and tribunal data to inform policy and practice. This is part of a broader Department of Justice NSW project to optimise the use of civil court and tribunal data for evidence-based decision-making.

The Foundation is analysing the quality and utility of the data by attempting to answer a series of policy questions in each jurisdiction, including:
  • Who is taking action against whom?
  • About what matters?
  • What are these matters worth?
  • Are matters defended/how do parties participate?
  • Are parties represented and by whom?
  • How do matters progress to finalisation?
  • How long do matters take?
  • How are matters finalised?
