2006 Justice Awards


The 2006 Justice Awards were presented at Parliament House, Sydney on 31 October 2006 and the 2006 Law and Justice Address was delivered by the Rgt. Hon Malcolm Fraser AC. CH.

Justice Medal

Winner - Peter Stapleton
Peter Stapleton was awarded the Justice Medal for his 40 year commitment and contribution to identifying legal need and creating solutions to meet them. Peter helped to establish the Aboriginal Legal Service and Redfern Legal Centre, as well as promoting pro bono services in law firms. He took a hands-on approach and volunteered many hours over many years at Redfern Legal Centre to assist people with their legal problems.

Aboriginal Justice Award

Winner - Lester Bostock
Lester received the Award in recognition of the vital role he has played in raising the profile of the unmet legal needs of Aboriginal people as founder of the Aboriginal Disability Network. Through the network, Lester advocates for Aboriginal people with disabilities, protects their human rights, and raises issues relating to legal need at all levels of community and government.

Law and Justice Volunteer Award

Winner - Balmain for Refugees
Balmain for Refugees is a voluntary group of over 100 individuals from Sydney's inner west. The group received the Award for their voluntary efforts to help asylum seekers at Villawood Detention Centre and those released without funds into the community. Their work includes referrals to pro bono services, fundraising, organising accommodation and food, and lobbying government for policy changes.

Pro Bono Partnership Award

Winner - The Exodus Foundation with Otto Stichter & Associated
The partnership received the Award for their 20 year relationship which has assisted many of the Foundation's clients with legal problems. With Otto Stichter providing the pro bono professional services, the Foundation was then able to concentrate on what it does best – delivering services to disadvantaged people.
